Singing, whether with the voice or on an instrument, is one of our most inherent modes of musical expression. For decades, trumpeters have used songs and vocal training collections like those of Concone and Bordogni in their daily practice to develop a natural, singing quality in their sound and melodic playing. Having practiced regularly from these collections myself, I became interested in finding vocalises (songs without words) by more celebrated composers. Through communications with publishers and sifting through music libraries, I tracked down many vocalises, including those from the little-known but extensive Hettich collection. Works from that Hettich collection became the primary resource for my recording Trumpet Vocalise and are now available in this modern compilation by Timothy Quinlan.
